From the editor’s desk: As primary election nears, so does deadline for endorsement letters

Published 9:00 am Saturday, February 3, 2024

Interstate 84 East reopens Jan. 10, 2024, after inclement weather for much of the morning, off of exit 216 near Pendleton.

Elections tend to stir a multitude of opinions and debates, and this year’s democratic exercise is gearing up to be one of the most contentious in recent memory.

In the bygone era predating the internet and the rise of social media, the local newspaper’s opinion page and letters to the editor were the primary platforms for expressing election-related viewpoints. While social media seems to be increasingly dominating that space, a crucial distinction remains.

Most Popular

Unlike the relatively unfiltered world of social media, letters to the editor must adhere to specific criteria, notably requiring a named author. Social media and the internet allow for the dissemination of opinions and “facts” with relative anonymity, providing a platform for controversy without the corresponding accountability.

In contrast, our letters to the editor uphold a verification process that adds an essential layer of responsibility to contributors. This forum serves as a dependable sounding board for the community, offering readers a reliable gauge of their neighbors’ perspectives on crucial matters, including elections.

While maintaining an open dialogue is crucial, the stringent verification process in place ensures a level of accountability that is not easily bypassed, reinforcing the healthy democratic exchange at the heart of our community. We recognize the significance of letters to the editor in gauging the community’s sentiment, guiding our coverage plans, and fostering civic engagement.

Given the volume of submissions and our thorough verification process, we regret that we cannot accept letters up to election day.

The deadline for submitting letters to the editor is 5 p.m. Friday, April 30. If you wish to contribute your thoughts on the election, be sure to meet this date. The last day we will publish endorsement letters to the editor is Saturday, May 18. We look forward to the community’s active participation in this valuable exchange of ideas.
