From the editor’s desk: Shortage of sexual assault nurse examiners has broad implications for all of Eastern Oregon

Recently, EO Media Group published a story regarding a shortage of sexual assault nurse examiners in Eastern Oregon.

The story, by Bennett Hall, delved into the shortage and why it is important. From a distance or at a glance, the shortage may not seem to rank up there with homelessness or government budgets but the story was, and is, extremely relevant.

The theme of the story is important because sexual assault nurse examiners play a crucial role in our justice system. When there isn’t a sexual assault nurse examiner available, then a victim of a rape may not, in the end, get the justice he or she deserves. They are essential to collect evidence in a timely manner to help our justice system deliver consequences to those who violate our laws.

The story, though, is also a good centerpiece regarding how we give readers news they can use. The shortage of sexual assault nurse examiners is serious and it has broad implications for all of Eastern Oregon. Shining a light on the problem is one good first step toward solving the problem. Problems in our democracy can’t be solved if they are clouded in either secrecy or ignorance. To solve a problem, it first must be identified and then analyzed. That’s what this story does for our readers. It gives you, the reader, the background and knowledge needed to make an informed decision regarding this issue.

So, if you haven’t had a chance to read the story, go onto our web site and check it out. It is an important read and one that can, ultimately, help make a difference.
