From the editor’s desk: Comprehensive coverage is a hallmark of our mission

A local Filipino resident found a way to get some multicultural holiday cheer.
Two Senate District 29 candidates are in the lead in terms of campaign money while out in Milton-Freewater police arrest an individual who has been spraying graffiti on local buildings.
These were some of the stories we presented to our readers last week and they illustrate the broad swath of coverage our newsrooms — whether in La Grande, Baker City, Hermiston, Pendleton, John Day or Wallowa — can provide on a daily basis.
That type of comprehensive coverage is one of the hallmarks of our mission. We want to be able to present a solid new package to our readers every day and while that takes a great deal of work by news staffers, it is also exactly the path we want to be on.
So as the new year rolls up on the horizon, I want readers to know that the type of coverage I outlined above will continue to be our focus in 2024. We’ve encountered some changes over the past year as a news organization but those changes, I believe, will put us in a far better position in the future to give our readers the news they not only need but can use.
There is a lot going on across our region, from government entities to local residents. News is happening at a fast pace and we want to ensure that we can stay ahead of it.
That means we will continue to keep our focus at a local level and work to give our readers the context, and the information, they need to be able to make informed decisions about key issues in their community.
We want to be able to present a news package to our readers every week that will hopefully leave them well-tuned to the important issues that affect them, their neighborhood and their town.
Here’s to a great 2024 for all of us. Happy New Year!
