From the editor’s desk: Getting out of our silos

Published 9:00 am Saturday, December 2, 2023

Those who represent EO Media Group in newspapers across the region don’t work inside a silo.

We are very much a part of the communities where our papers circulate — both in print and online — and we intend to keep it that way.

Recently many subscribers may have read a short piece recently where I answered a few questions in an effort to give readers a little better understanding of my background and experience.

That spotlight will continue and we will introduce our employees over time in just such a manner. The effort is designed to do a few things at once. One, it gives readers — I hope — a view of where I came from and what I did to get to the slot I fill now, regional editorial director, publisher and editor.

The intent is not to toot my own horn. Instead, the new feature is designed to give readers an introduction to who we are and why we do what we do.

Another aim is to illustrate that those who work at your local newspaper are part of your community. We work and play inside the same area you do.

All too often in the past I think there’s been a tendency in our business for the creation of little silos where the reporters and editors and ad representatives and circulation employees seem cut off from their community.

I admit I’ve never come across that circumstance as a member of EO Media Group but I’ve seen it in other areas of the West and it’s always slightly frustrating to me.

That’s because to be successful, every newsroom must reflect their community and every community is a little bit different. Milton-Freewater is a little bit different from, say, Pendleton. That’s what makes us unique and, I think, what makes us a strong regional-wide community.

I want you, the reader, to get to know who we are. I want you to understand that we are part of the overall fabric of the community and the work we do is important. I also hope these introductions show we care deeply about all the communities we work in. What we do is important but how we bring our services to you, the reader, is just as important.
