Riverside boys rake in soccer awards

BOARDMAN — The Riverside Pirates capped their successful soccer season with senior attacker Jose Napoles being named the Special District 6 Player of the Year.

The Pirates, who won the league title with an 8-0 record, finished the season with a 15-2 record. They lost in the 3A/2A/1A state semifinals to Dayton 2-1.

In addition to Napoles, Riverside had seven other players named to the all-league first team — seniors Adair Rodriguez, Pablo Claustro, Diego Magana, Trinidad Mendoza, Benny Sanchez, Bert Sanchez, and sophomore goalkeeper Juan Medina.

Napoles, who also was a first-team 3A/2A/1A all-state selection, had nine goals and eight assists on the season.

Claustro had a team-high 18 goals and six assists for the Pirates. He also was named to the all-state honorable mention team as a forward.

Defender Benny Sanchez, who earned second-team all-state honors, chipped in three goals and three assists.

Rodriguez, who earned all-state honorable mention honors as a midfielder, had 10 goals and eight assists.

Medina, who had 50 saves on the season, also posted 11 shutouts — six of which came in league play. He was an honorable mention all-state selection.

Magana scored 10 goals with nine assists during the season, and earned all-state honorable mention honors as a midfielder.

Defender Bert Sanchez had four goals and four assists, and reeled in all-state honorable mention honors.

Mendoza, who had three goals and nine assists, also was named to the all-state honorable mention team as a midfielder.

Senior defender Jacob Ayala of Irrigon also was named to the first team, and to the all-state honorable mention team.
