PENDLETON — A driver that tried to pass Tuesday, Oct. 5, on Highway 11 near Pendleton ended up in a crash and needed rescuing.

According to Oregon State Police, an 89-year-old man from Walla Walla was driving a Toyota Rav4 north on Highway 11 when he decided to pass traffic near milepost 7, several miles outside Pendleton.

A dust cloud from a nearby tractor plowing a field prevented the move, however, and a southbound Ford Fiesta swerved into a ditch to avoid crashing into the oncoming Toyota. But the two vehicles collided, according to OSP, and the Toyota rolled and came to a stop on its side

Firefighters and emergency medical personnel arrived and freed the driver, and an ambulance took him to a local hospital.

Relatives of the other driver, a 25-year-old woman from Adams, took her to a hospital.

State police also reported a trooper cited the Toyota’s driver for unsafe passing.
