Milton-Freewater police arrest man in burglary, assault

MILTON-FREEWATER — A suspect in a burglary and assault from early August is now in jail.

Joel Torres, 32, was arrested Wednesday, Sept. 15, on the following: unlawful use of a weapon; first-degree burglary; menacing; reckless endangering; and a parole violation warrant.

The Milton-Freewater Police Department reported that Torres broke into his former girlfriend’s apartment in the middle of the night Aug. 8 and beat her up with a backpack.

When police found Torres on Sept. 15, he ran away, but they managed to chase him down and arrested him on Cowl Street. Police booked Torres in the Umatilla County Jail, where he remains on preliminary bail of $50,000.
