Letter: Confederate history is still history

Congratulations to Pendleton for preserving the sidewalk stamps on Byers Avenue. While much of
the history of the Unites States is not pretty or acceptable by today’s standards, we cannot change
history.

As far back as the Stamp Act, when the colonists refused to pay taxes without representation, they
were wrong in a way. England had spent a great deal of money sending troops to the colonies to help in
their defense in the French/Indian War. Without their aid, the colonies could not have won. Still, they
refused to pay the tea tax. They always stated that without representation, they should not pay. Always
two sides to a problem.

The Civil War was a great tragedy in our country. So many lives lost, so much property destroyed
forever. Does that mean we should forget those people who fought for what they believed was right? We can’t change history.

Robert E. Lee was a great general, albeit on the wrong side, but destroying his
statue or name on a street will not change history.
