FLORA Traditional baking classes, including Old Time Strudel and Old Time Milk & Cookies, will be offered through Flora School, and held at North End Crossing Barn & Bed in Flora.
Milk and cookies is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The cost is $42 and incudes all supplies. The strudel class is Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The classes are $42 each or participants can sign up for both for $79. Flora is located about 35 miles north of Enterprise.
Instructor Leah Ott will demonstrate the traditional way to stretch dough, hoping not to tear it, then filling and baking in the wood cookstove. (If you have read some of the Elm Creek Quilters series you will know how difficult and fun this can be.) This is a tradition from more than just Germany. According to Leah, we should be able to make a non-pulled strudel too.
Fillings are decided on by class members.
In addition, classes for up to six people can be set up on Milk & Cookies the Pioneer Way. Instructor Vanessa Thew Thompson takes participants back in time to grind the flour, make the vanilla, prepare the sugar, milk the cow (if freshened) and make the baking powder before eating one single griddle cookie.
