Prize fighters have often been accused of breaking the law but Charles Jost, well known local welterweight, has demonstrated that a pugilist is not without his value as a guardian of the law also, if his abilities are properly directed, and thereby is suggested a solution to the problem of what will become of professional boxers when the fistic game is put under a universal ban. Jost is now the city marshal of Pilot Rock. He held that position last week in a temporary capacity but has proved such a success that Mayor Casteel has now tendered him the position permanently. Not content with restoring order, Jost initiated a new practice which has made his appointment a money saving one to the little city. Every prisoner has been put to work on the streets instead of being required to rest in idleness in the bastile and eat up the citys money.

Tractor exhaust on the John Hannah Jr. ranch was blamed for a 650-acre fire Friday that destroyed wheat, barley, pasture lands and stubble on the Hannah and Dick Wilkinson ranches on Hinton Creek. The blaze, discovered about 11 a.m., was reported out of control about noon and an announcement at the Morrow County Fair and throughout town brought more than 100 men to the scene. Four times the Heppner rural fire truck had to turn to fight fire at its back when whirlwinds blew chaff into new blazes. Battling the blaze until 3 p.m. were two wheel driven tractors, track layers, sprayers, tankers, two way radio equipped machinery and the county road equipment.

Police and officials are continuing to investigate four fires set downtown within 40 minutes of each other Tuesday night. The first fire, which did the most damage, was reported about 10:15 p.m. behind the Wood Connection in the 400 block of South Main, assistant fire chief and fire marshal Ron Campbell said. After firemen battled the Wood Connection blaze for about a half hour, a second fire was reported about 10:51 p.m. behind the Liquor Store, 700 S.E. Emigrant. Four minutes later, at 10:55, a fire was reported burning in a trash can near Crabbys Pub. At 10:56 p.m., the fourth fire was reported burning in shrubbery on the east side of the Post Office. We do have a possible suspect or two at this time and thats what were working on, Campbell said.
