Splattered bugs lots of them are the key to winning a fundraising event sponsored by the Blue Mountain Chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse.
During the approximately 140-mile ride, bikers bank on bugs biting the big one on their targets. The event is Sunday, Sept. 2 with registration beginning at noon at Cadillac Jacks Bar and Grill, 1703 S.W. Emigrant Ave., Pendleton. The cost is $15 per bike and $5 for extra targets.
Last years inaugural event drew 53 bikes, said Black Jack, one of the events organizer.
The organizationss roots, Black Jack said, began with Chief, a licensed clinical social worker in Utah who knew of a child who was so fearful of his perpetrators of abuse he wouldnt leave the house.
Chief began to include the boy in his biker circle and within weeks the boy was seen all over town riding his bike and playing with other children.
The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995 when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family that first ride had 27 bikes present, the organizations website states.
Black Jack got involved with the Columbia Basin Chapter, based in the Tri-Cities. He helped start the chapter in Eastern Oregon, which is operating under a temporary charter. New chapters, Black Jack said, require an interim period before they receive full membership.
Black Jack enjoys giving back to the community and said he sees children responding to bikers.
When I was riding my bike before, the kids would wave at me from cars, he said.
Bikers, Black Jack said, often are very charitable and look at ways to give to the community. Every bike function whether its a poker run or other rides is a fundraiser to help others, Black Jack said.
Its always about charity and getting together with others and enjoying a ride together, he said. I come from a large family with lots of nieces and nephews. I knew the need was here and I wanted to do something useful with my time.
The event also includes a car/bike wash. After the ride, people will gather back at Cadillac Jacks. The fun continues with a 50/50 raffle, prizes and the music of Indigo Art.
