A sheriff, an ex-chief of police, an automobile and a revolver comprised the combination which brought to bay George Kemp, an alleged bad check artist and motorcycle thief this morning. After Sheriff Taylor and ex-Chief Tom Gurdane had chased him down Alta street in an auto about 11 oclock and the former had pursued him over fences, across lots and through three blocks, he was induced to submit to arrest upon sight of the sheriffs revolver. Kemp is wanted in Union county for passing alleged bad checks in Elgin. The owner of the stolen motorcycle has not yet been discovered.

When Umatilla County formally observes its 100th anniversary at the Hermiston County Fair grounds the night of Aug. 15, one of the features will be a huge birthday cake in the shape of the county. The cake will be baked by Ingleheart Bros., it was announce by the Centennial Committee Chairman Raphael Raymond, and word received at the Pendleton Chamber of Commerce today indicated it would be surmounted by a candle provided by the Chamber of Commerce at Independence, Mo. Independence was the jumping off place for the early pioneering treks across the plains from Missouri to Oregon, and in addition that district provided some of the Umatilla Countys earliest pioneers.

From rock band member to child psychologist may seem like a big jump, but it was an easy one for Bob Pringle, who uses music a a creative outlet. For most of the year Pringle serves as a school counselor for the Umatilla School District in kindergarten through eighth grade. But in his free time and during the summer, he is better known as a jazz guitarist and music instructor at Whitman College in Walla Walla. Those who meet the quiet, unassuming Pringle may find it hard to believe that he once played rock music with a California band called the Zodiac, a Palo Alto-based band that was a starting point for Jerry Garcia, leader of famed Grateful Dead.
