Bullpen blows lead, 1st MLB win for former Buck

OAKLAND, Calif. Dan Straily became the fifth rookie pitcher to start a game this season for the Oakland Athletics when he made his MLB debut  Friday.

Straily threw six innings of solid ball against the Toronto Blue Jays, striking out five while allowing just one earned run, and left with a 4-1 lead. The only run against him had been a Rajai Davis sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

The 23-year-old former Pendleton Buckaroo was in line for his first major league victory until the ninth inning when closer Ryan Cook gave up a three-run home run to Jeff Mathis to tie the game 4-4.

The score remained there and was in the 14th inning when the East Oregonian went to press.

Straily was called up to the As this week from Triple-A Sacramento where hed posted a 5-2 record with an ERA of 1.36 over 53 innings pitched. Between Sacramento and Double-AA Midland (Texas), Straily was leading all of baseball in Ks with 175.

Straily played Little League and Babe Ruth baseball in Pendleton before moving to Springfield his junior year of high school and pitching for Thurston.

Oakland picked the pitcher with the 723rd overall selection in the 24th round of the 2009 MLB?draft.
