Four area emergency sirens won’t be functional during a test on Tuesday.

The four sirens are being moved and won’t be in place during the monthly test. The sirens are at:

*Radar Road in Umatilla County;

*Highway 395 in Stanfield;

*Gravel Pit Lane in Morrow County, and;

*West Canal Drive in Morrow County.

Because people have said some sirens have been hard to hear and because of population growth, Oregon Emergency Management is relocating several sirens.

Seven additional sirens are being constructed and will be soon installed around the area. They will not be part of the June test.

Currently, 35 sirens have been placed in the two counties. Seven more operate at the Umatilla Chemical Depot west of Hermiston.

The monthly event tests the emergency sirens and staff for preparations of an accident at the depot. The depot stores 3,717 tons of chemical weapons which are planned to be destroyed at a weapons incinerator that is still under construction there.

The noon test will feature a minute-long steady tone. During an actual emergency, the sirens would send a repeating “whoop-whoop” sound for three minutes.

OEM recommends that people practice tuning to local radio stations during the test; in an actual event, the radio stations will receive instructions from emergency officials.
